The first thing I think about when I see this card is ìPerforming all actions though faithî. This is from the key at the back of Norma Cowie's book Tarot for Successful Living. I often think about that scene from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, where he's facing the leap of faith. He often comes up in Readings for people who are starting a spiritual journey or are ready for the next step on their spiritual journey. He can indicate the beginning point, the innocence of looking at the world in a positive light, the starting point of positive action and development.
He has been placed both at the beginning and the end of the 22 major arcana of the traditional 78 card tarot deck. I like to think of him as thought not yet borne into action. Just the contemplation of a journey into a different mindset.
When I look at the card, I see a young man or woman disguised set out on the journey of his life. With his faithful companion and a small satchel that contains all his worldly possessions. The sun is at his back and his head is up high, he's about to walk off a cliff, but he knows that he will be caught gently and eased into this great journey he has set off to accomplish. (I love his colourful robe, skin tight pants, and boots if only youth dressed like that nowadays...:)
In a reading the fool can say a lot about where my friend is at in this moment. We are facing a fresh new choice, that we must make completely by faith and by using our own judgement and based on our own experiences. It's about new creations and setting out to accomplish impossibly beautiful goals or art.
There is of course always the warning in this card: to be careful and thoughtful about all your actions especially ones going in new directions.
